GERMS!
Did you know : Nearly 22 million school days lost each year due to the common cold and flu (CDC) and as many as 2.7 million bacterial found per square inch on common school surfaces (NSF International), it’s no wonder that 82 percent of parents with kids in grades K-5 fret about the germs in their children’s classrooms (according to a survey conducted by Seventh Generation).
Ugh! No one wants to miss school due to a cold or other illness.
I have some tips to help protect your children's health this school year courtesy of Dr. Alan Greene and Seventh Generation.
Optimize the immune system
* Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn't last as long.
* Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
* Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.
Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs
* Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving "high-risk" places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
* Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
* Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
* Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.
Great tips!

I have numerous cans of Lysol all over my house. I spray it all the time. In the crib, on the door handles, down the staircase...everywhere!
We use 7th Gen products all over the house! I love their laundry detergent!
We use air purifiers to keep the allergens down around here. They've made a huge difference in our breathing!
I don't want my household to be entirely germ free, because germs can be beneficial to humans also. So I just clean regularly, but not obsessively.

I use Lysol sprays and wipes, constantly
I bleach everything.
I insist we wash our hands whenever we come home. I do use lysol on doorknobs, hard surfaces that germs can live on for a long time.

I wish my house was germ free lol. I try to keep it that way at least by wiping down the bathroom area w/ clorox wipes. Other than that I use mostly all natural cleaners and just try to keep a regular routine for cleaning. "everything in its place" so to say.
take off shoes when get inside- change outdoor clothes to home clothes when we get in and throw away excess trash
I'd love to win this pack! I'm a big fan of safer cleaning products! We always take off shoes at the front door when coming home and wash hands before eating!
No shoes in the house, Purell every where, and daily wipedowns! scg00387 at yahoo dot com
Oh I want to win!! I love 7th Generation products!! I always like to keep hand santitizer around everywhere so it is easy to access instead of having it in one place that you have to go to :)

This is a fantastic contest! Around my own home I lysol the remote controls and door handles once a week (now I'm feeling guilty like I should do it more often!). I also run bleach in our washing machine after a handful of washes.
After reading these other comments, I have some new ideas to use!
I have softsoap in the kitchen and bathrooms so we can wash our hands when needed.

Well, sort of germ containment/resistance - I make lemonade with home grown lemons and drink a glass of that a day. Then, I seem to have pretty good resistance to the colds my daughter brings home from school. Too bad she's old enough to think she knows it all, and won't follow my advice for her to do the same... then she wouldn't be bringing them home in the first place!

I am not a germaphobe. I only use green cleaning products and I clean regularly or at least try to.

I keep a bottle with some rubbing alcohol around to use to wipe up the bathroom sink and toilet to disinfect naturally.
I don't think any household is germ free but we greatly reduce germs with frequent handwashing, liberal usage of hand sanitizer and regular cleaning with bleach based products.

Cleaning the dishwasher monthly.
Place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with plain white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle - except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be empty.
The vinegar will help to wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitizes, and helps remove the musty odor.
Water only now (

btw your comments smell of peaches
I do the normal cleaning and disinfecting, but with 2 boys the most important germ free thing I do is making sure they wash their hands regularly. They were horrible about actually doing this, so now I have a sniff check - they come out with their hands raised and if I don't smell the soap, it's back to the sink! haha, it works! :)
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

During school, when the children come home we wash hands and change clothes. The uniforms go straight into the wash. During flu season, I started this when I watched a show on how many germs are transported on a school uniform.
